Photography

Photography, film and digital media are all around us. They are the design, the advertisement, the motion picture, the front cover, the graphics, the documentary and the art. They are the way we communicate, they are the jobs of the future.

St Bede's is one of the best places in the country to study KS4 and KS5 photography.

The highly successful GCSE course is a very popular option at KS4 with over one hundred students in Y10 and 11 combined. There are five lessons a fortnight where students will be introduced to the darkroom environment; developing images through chemical processes and the digital suite using editing software on the latest iMac computers. Students will learn how to document life and and how to be a prolific journalist of their own ideas. Pupils will gain research skills that will help them to progress their photographs from pastime documentation into art.

Photography in A level is a consistently outstanding course in terms of value added pupil progress data. There are nine lessons a fortnight for both AS and A level courses where the students will learn how to use DSLR and SLR cameras effectively and fully manually in order to become highly skilled practitioners. Photography students will be able to use all the mediums of our subjects whether it be celluloid film or digital technology to create, process, develop and edit to an extremely high level. A popular annual weekend trip abroad is offered to Year 12 students where they can absorb the culture and art of a European city.

All members of the photography department have extensive experience in their subject and they also teach in the art department.
