Design & Technology visit to Jaguar
St Bede's' Design and Technology students from Years 10, 12 and 13 visited Jaguar on Wednesday 3 February 2016.
After an early morning start, they arrived at Castle Bromwich to have a tour around the factory where they saw the Jaguar XF being made. Students learnt about modern production methods as they saw car bodies being riveted together by robots and then later the engine transmission system being fitted along with all the seats and trim. The logistics behind all the different parts being delivered to the production line just in time was amazing.
In the afternoon they visited the Jaguar Land Rover Research and Development centre at Gaydon. Here they saw various tests being carried out on parts of cars including a robot repeatedly getting into and out of a seat. They saw full size prototype car parts being made by 3 D printers. We also had a go at trying our hand at controlling assembly line robots (simulation only).
All the students enjoyed themselves and gained a lot from the visit.
