An education is so much more than just what is learnt in the classroom, and it is for that reason that at St Bede's we offer an extensive array of enrichment opportunities*. Whatever interests and talents an individual has, we hope they will find something exciting to get involved in at St Bede's.
In order to maximise learning, our Sixth Form provides you with opportunities to learn from professionals. Recent activities have included a talk from a history professor about the subject at university, seminars in geography to discuss topics studied throughout the course and a visit from the local MP to discuss government and politics. Our business and economics students receive regular talks from a variety of enterprise companies from local start ups to Aldi, attend lectures at the LSE, and have the opportunity to learn more about the EU on a trip to Brussels. In 2017, we had a visit from David Dein, former Arsenal managing director along with ex Gunner and Brazilian star Gilberto Silva, who spoke to our business and PE students. David outlined the business model of the Premier League.
Students are also offered the possibility to gain from real-world experiences. Politics students take part in Question Time at the local council, whilst business and economics students have the chance to get involved in the management consultancy of a local charity. As well as these opportunities, several groups of students have been entered into competitions in their subject, such as the British Physics Olympiad, and a national business and economics competition.
The music and drama departments frequently attend theatre productions or concerts to supplement their in-class learning.
St Bede’s students also get the chance to benefit from exciting opportunities further afield. These range from the annual psychology visit to Marwell Zoo, the history trip to Washington DC every other year, a geography field trip to Iceland, an art and photography visit to Paris and a joint history, sociology and psychology trip to Poland, including Auschwitz. We also organise an annual expedition to Tanzania in conjunction with the charity GoMAD, where students get the opportunity to work on community projects and experience local culture.
There is a senior orchestra and choir where sixth form students take the leading roles, as well as regular performances of various musical groups both in and out of school. Much anticipated events in the school calendar include our Act I and Act II concerts and the ‘Slide’ band tour to Derbyshire. Music and music technology students also get the opportunity to go to performances at the Royal Festival Hall, the English National Opera and visits to professional recording studios.
There are excellent sports facilities and opportunities at St Bede’s including a prominent rugby team, amongst other sports. The rugby team benefits from professional coaching and regular matches against local school teams. The highlight of every year is the Charlotte Fawcett Memorial Game where the sixth form boys play against the ‘old boys’, whilst raising significant sums for charity.
At St Bede’s there is the opportunity for sixth form students to achieve their Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award. This is increasingly popular with our students, and the skills and qualities gained are invaluable.
We attend the Oxford and Cambridge student conferences and support applications for Headstart, Medicine, Vetcam and the Oxford law conference to mention but a few. We also encourage students to get involved in university visits, which are often organised by the school.
A highlight of the year is the annual RAG week, organised by 6th form students. In 2020, £9,754 was raised for our four chosen charities.
* Please note: We will be following guidance from the Department for Education regarding school trips, clubs and activities during the coronavirus pandemic and this may impact the full range offered in 2021-22.
